Rural Manitoba residents are facing a new wave of fuel theft as suspects drill directly into vehicle gas tanks to siphon gasoline, leaving victims with costly repairs and significant inconvenience. The RCMP has reported multiple incidents across the region, with thieves targeting parked vehicles, often under cover of darkness.
How the thefts occur
According to investigators, the suspects approach vehicles, typically trucks or SUVs, and use a drill to puncture the gas tank. They then insert a hose to extract the fuel, often stealing dozens of liters at a time. The method is quick but destructive, leaving behind a hole that requires tank replacement or professional repair.
Victims speak out
One affected resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the ordeal as a "huge inconvenience." "I went to start my truck in the morning and saw a puddle of gas underneath. It cost me over $800 to fix the tank," he said. Another victim noted that the theft not only drained their fuel but also left their vehicle undriveable for days.
RCMP response
The RCMP is urging residents to park in well-lit areas, install security cameras, and report suspicious activity. "We are actively investigating these incidents and encourage anyone with information to come forward," said Corporal Julie Courchaine. Police believe the stolen fuel is being sold on the black market or used for personal consumption.
Economic impact
With fuel prices already high, the thefts add an extra burden on rural communities. Farmers and small business owners are particularly vulnerable, as they rely on vehicles for their livelihoods. "This is not just a nuisance; it's a financial hit," said a local farmer.
Prevention tips
- Park in secure, well-lit areas
- Install motion-sensor lights or cameras
- Consider locking gas caps or anti-siphon devices
- Report any suspicious behavior to police immediately
The RCMP continues to patrol affected areas and is working with local communities to prevent further incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact their local detachment or Crime Stoppers.
