Hamilton teens used fake cash in Facebook Marketplace sales

Two Hamilton teenagers have been charged after allegedly using counterfeit currency to purchase items from sellers on Facebook Marketplace, according to Hamilton Police Service.

Details of the incidents

Police say the suspects, a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old male, arranged to meet sellers through the online marketplace and paid for goods using fake $50 and $100 bills. The incidents occurred between June 1 and June 20, 2026, in various locations across Hamilton.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. The teens face charges including fraud under $5,000 and possession of counterfeit money.

Police warning and investigation

Hamilton Police Constable Krista-Lee Ernst said, “We urge anyone who suspects they may have received counterfeit bills in a transaction to contact police immediately.” The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing security footage and transaction records.

The accused were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court in July 2026.
