A new online platform is helping consumers in the Maritimes compare grocery prices and discounts in real time, aiming to reduce food insecurity. The tool aggregates data from major retailers, allowing users to find the best deals on essential items.
How the Platform Works
The platform, developed by a team at Dalhousie University, tracks prices and promotions at stores like Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, and Walmart. Users can search for specific products and see which store offers the lowest price, including discounts and loyalty program savings. According to the project lead, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, the goal is to empower shoppers to make informed choices and stretch their budgets.
Impact on Food Insecurity
Food insecurity affects over 20% of households in the Maritimes, according to a 2025 report by Food Banks Canada. The platform provides a practical solution by highlighting weekly deals and price differences. “This tool can save families up to 30% on their grocery bills,” said Charlebois. The platform is free to use and updates prices daily.
Future Expansion
The developers plan to expand the platform to include more stores and regions across Canada. They are also working on a mobile app with barcode scanning for instant price comparisons. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
