The Alberta Energy Rebate portal for $100 'Dani Dollars' officially opened on Canada Day, July 1, 2026. The program, announced by Premier Danielle Smith on June 17, aims to offset high energy costs for millions of Albertans.
Eligibility and Application Process
Close to 3.4 million Albertans are eligible for the rebate. To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, an Alberta resident with a verified alberta.ca account, have filed a 2025 tax return, and have a household income of $225,000 or less. This income threshold applies to single individuals or two individuals who are married or in a common-law relationship.
Albertans 18 and over living at the same address but not married or common-law are considered separate households. Each adult must apply separately to receive the payment.
Albertans receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), or Income Support as of July 1 are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply.
How to Apply
Eligible Albertans can apply online from July 1 to September 30 by visiting the secure portal at alberta.ca/alberta-energy-rebate. Applicants must log into their verified Alberta.ca account, verify their information, and register through the portal at https://energyrebate.alberta.ca. Applications will be reviewed and validated to ensure eligibility criteria are met.
Payments will be issued via Interac e-transfer within 14 days of applying. Those without e-transfer capabilities should contact their bank to set it up. The rebate is non-taxable and does not affect eligibility for provincial or federal benefits.
Background and Impact
The rebate was introduced instead of the 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax relief that would have taken effect in July after West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices exceeded the US$90 threshold during the province's 20-day review period. Finance Minister Jason Nixon stated that the government will weigh future rebates against the fuel tax relief program.
In a news release, Nixon said, “The Alberta Energy Rebate goes beyond fuel costs. It’s about making sure more Albertans are receiving the right supports, when and where they need them most. By delivering payments directly, we are guaranteeing relief reaches more Albertans now, not later.” The release added that the rebate provides 50% more savings to the average Albertan than they would have saved on fuel taxes over three months.
Premier Danielle Smith announced the rebate on June 17, acknowledging that the UCP government recognizes Albertans are feeling the financial pinch. The program is part of broader efforts to address energy affordability in the province.
