New Brunswick Unveils Ambitious Plan to Become Canada's Leading Mining Jurisdiction

At the prestigious Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto, New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt announced a groundbreaking comprehensive minerals strategy with a clear objective: to transform the province into the best place for mining operations in Canada. The announcement, made on Monday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, signals a significant shift in the province's approach to natural resource development.

From Potential to Performance: A Strategic Vision

Premier Holt articulated a vision of moving New Brunswick from "potential" to "performance" in the mining sector. "We have a goal to permit faster than anyone else, maintaining that rigour, ensuring the kind of standards that Canada is known for, but making sure that your project is ready to attract investment and get going," Holt declared to industry leaders and investors gathered at the international mining conference.

The strategy focuses on several key priorities designed to bolster mining activity across the province:

  • Streamlining regulatory and permitting processes for increased efficiency
  • Implementing targeted incentives to strengthen competitiveness and encourage new mine development
  • Advancing local planning around infrastructure, housing, essential services, and workforce development
  • Ensuring that growth does not place undue pressure on local community systems

Critical Minerals and Indigenous Participation

New Brunswick Natural Resources Minister John Herron highlighted a remarkable geological advantage during the announcement. "Fun fact, folks, 21 of the 34 critical minerals that have been identified by the federal government are found in the geology of New Brunswick," Herron revealed, emphasizing the province's untapped mineral wealth.

Premier Holt specifically mentioned several of these valuable resources, including:

  1. Potash
  2. Uranium
  3. Zinc
  4. Copper
  5. Tungsten
  6. Molybdenum
  7. Indium
  8. Antimony
  9. Manganese

The strategy also places significant emphasis on fostering meaningful Indigenous participation in mineral development. This includes expanding opportunities for Indigenous-owned businesses within the mineral development supply chain and promoting greater awareness among investors, suppliers, and the general public about Indigenous partnerships in resource projects.

Infrastructure Advantages and Economic Goals

Premier Holt pointed to New Brunswick's substantial infrastructure advantages that position the province uniquely for mining development. "We have 40,000 kilometres of forested road already built through our beautiful province. We have rail connection. We have two deep water ports, including one in Belledunne that is a set down for bulk and minerals, a place to transship all around the world," she explained.

These transportation networks mean that "your employees don't have to live in a camp" and resources can move efficiently from extraction to global markets. This logistical advantage represents a significant competitive edge for mining companies considering operations in the province.

Revitalizing a Declining Sector

The announcement comes at a critical time for New Brunswick's mining industry. Historically, mining activity contributed approximately seven percent of the province's gross domestic product (GDP). However, over the past two decades, this contribution has dwindled significantly, now accounting for less than one percent of provincial GDP.

Premier Holt expressed ambitious economic targets for the sector's revival. "I'd love to see it double from one percent to two percent, to four percent between now and 2030," she stated optimistically. As new investments and projects come online, the province plans to create detailed forecasts projecting their expected contributions to economic growth.

The comprehensive strategy was announced alongside Canada's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, who has previously described Canada's mining sector as being at a "hinge moment" while announcing new critical minerals projects. Minister Herron reinforced the province's commitment, stating that New Brunswick aims to "unlock a lot of wealth" from its natural resources through this strategic initiative.

This minerals strategy represents New Brunswick's most significant effort in years to reposition itself as a leading destination for mining investment in Canada, combining regulatory efficiency, infrastructure advantages, critical mineral resources, and meaningful community partnerships into a cohesive development plan.
