Disney World Resort Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Bed Bug Infestation
A tourist who stayed at a Disney World resort in Florida has filed a lawsuit against the entertainment giant, alleging he endured permanent pain and suffering due to a bed bug infestation during his visit. The case, which highlights concerns over hotel safety and maintenance protocols, was filed in Orange County Circuit Court on March 31, 2026.
Details of the Alleged Incident
According to the complaint obtained by People magazine, David Besse claims he was "bitten numerous times by cimicidae (bed bugs)" while staying at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort on May 15, 2022. Besse detailed the incident in legal documents, asserting that the hotel failed to implement proper pest control measures and adequate staff training.
The lawsuit specifically accuses the resort of:
- Failing to train maintenance and housekeeping staff to conduct frequent room inspections
- Not using insecticidal dust in hallways and guest rooms
- Neglecting to install active mattress liners and mattress encasements to protect against fluids and stains
Alleged Injuries and Damages Sought
Besse claims he suffered significant physical and emotional harm as a result of the bed bug bites. The lawsuit lists multiple injuries including scarring, bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, and mental anguish. Additionally, Besse alleges financial losses from medical expenses, loss of earnings, diminished earning capacity, and property damage.
"The losses are either permanent or continuing, and Plaintiff will suffer the losses in the future," states the legal complaint. While the exact financial impact wasn't detailed in the filing, Besse is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 and has requested a trial by jury.
Disney's Response and Resort Information
The Toronto Sun has reached out to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for comment on the allegations. Disney World operates 30 themed resorts in Florida, ranging from deluxe hotels near the parks to more budget-friendly options. The All-Star Sports Resort is one of five value resorts located near Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park, alongside All-Star Movies Resort, All-Star Music Resort, Art of Animation Resort, and Pop Century Resort.
Understanding Bed Bugs and Travel Safety
According to Health Canada, bed bugs prefer hiding in sleeping areas including mattresses, box springs, and night tables. While they're not known to spread disease, their bites can cause skin reactions that may take up to 14 days to appear. Some individuals show no reaction at all, while others experience minor to significant discomfort.
Health Canada recommends several precautions for travelers:
- Inspect hotel rooms thoroughly, checking beds, furniture, walls, and even electrical outlets
- Avoid placing luggage on floors or beds; use luggage racks or bathtubs instead
- Pay special attention to mattress seams, headboards, and cushion tufts where bed bugs often hide
This lawsuit comes at a time when travelers are increasingly concerned about hotel hygiene and safety standards. The case against Disney World highlights the importance of proper pest control measures in hospitality settings, particularly at high-traffic tourist destinations that host millions of visitors annually.
