Homes by Avi Debuts Net Zero Show Homes in Edmonton and Calgary
Net Zero Homes Showcased in Edmonton and Calgary

Alberta homebuyers now have the opportunity to experience cutting-edge energy efficiency firsthand as Homes by Avi unveils its first net zero show homes in both Edmonton and Calgary. These innovative properties represent a significant step forward in sustainable home construction within the province.

Meet Leonard and Gregory: Alberta's Net Zero Ambassadors

The company has transformed two of its most popular home models into net zero demonstrations. In Edmonton, the Leonard model now serves as a net zero showcase in the Uplands at Riverview community, while in Calgary, the Gregory model fulfills the same role in the new Sora community. Both homes have been completely re-engineered to achieve net zero status while maintaining their appeal to modern homebuyers.

Michael Jacobson, director of product development at Homes by Avi, explained the comprehensive upgrades implemented in these homes. The building envelope received significant enhancements with additional insulation in the attic, exterior walls, basement frost walls, and beneath the slab to dramatically reduce heating requirements. Solar panels were integrated to generate renewable energy that offsets consumption, while high-efficiency mechanical systems including furnaces, hot water heaters, and smart thermostats further optimize energy performance.

Buyer Response and Market Education

According to sales representatives in both cities, the net zero show homes have generated considerable interest from potential buyers, though there remains a knowledge gap about what net zero living actually entails.

Reg Lee, Homes by Avi's sales manager in Calgary, noted that most buyers aren't fully aware of the specifics and benefits of net zero homes. Maria Kennedy, general manager for Edmonton, added that while homebuyers show curiosity about the construction methods, price remains a crucial factor in their decision-making process. She emphasized the need for more education around the long-term benefits, especially in a market where upfront costs can be challenging to justify.

The Practical Benefits of Net Zero Living

The most immediate advantage homeowners will notice is significantly improved energy performance. These homes require less energy for heating, resulting in noticeably lower utility bills throughout the year. Jacobson stressed that their goal wasn't to create a high-tech demonstration home but to build one that aligns with their current standards using the same trades, materials, and building practices.

The physical changes are minimal - slightly thicker walls that reduce interior space by approximately two inches per side. This small trade-off results in a quieter, more comfortable, and substantially more energy-efficient living environment.

When asked why Homes by Avi is pursuing net zero construction now, Kennedy explained that net zero construction is constantly evolving, and the company wanted to go through the entire building process themselves to better educate and support their customers. This hands-on experience positions them to scale up net zero construction as building codes and customer expectations continue shifting toward Net Zero Energy Ready and fully net zero standards.
