Two homes in Gibsons, British Columbia—127 Mahan Road and 980 Gower Point Road—are listed for sale together or individually, offering panoramic views of the Salish Sea and Pasley Islands. The properties, renovated and built by owners Alex Chuaqui and Fia Cooper, are marketed by Sue Scott of Engel & Völkers Vancouver.
From Weekend Cottage to Full-Time Renovation
Chuaqui and Cooper had been visiting their Pender Harbour cottage from Vancouver on weekends since their son was born 12 years ago. In 2017, they decided to move to the Sunshine Coast permanently. They sold their Vancouver property and purchased an older home built in 1966 on Mahan Road in Gibsons, attracted by its stunning views.
“It needed a ton of work,” says listing agent Sue Scott. “But they were up for it.” The couple, experienced in custom design and renovation—including heritage buildings in Gastown—undertook a full renovation of the 60-year-old home over three years.
Extensive Renovation of the Mahan Road Home
The exterior was extensively renovated, including a new metal and torch-on roof, all-new cedar shake siding, refinished decking, and completely redesigned landscaping. “A fully fenced, pet-friendly perimeter provides privacy and security, along with a newly poured concrete driveway,” says Cooper. Nearly 1,500 square feet of deck and patio space—a deck off every principal area—includes one shaded by a huge 50-year-old maple tree.
Inside, the post-and-beam rancher spans 2,421 square feet with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Open-concept reclaimed wood flooring connects a spacious living area with a green-wrapped dining nook and kitchen featuring butcher block maple countertops, a Whirlpool gas stove, LG refrigerator and washer/dryer, and a Bosch dishwasher. “It faces the Pasley Islands, so you wake up to morning light and this incredible ocean view,” says Scott. “I’m not sure I’d get out of bed if I woke to that every day.”
Major upgrades include all-new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, a gas fireplace, new windows and doors, new drywall throughout, and upgraded insulation. Cabinetry is by Delta’s Hi-Design Custom Cabinetry Ltd., and bathroom countertops are made from reclaimed fir salvaged from Vancouver’s historic Pantages Theatre.
Building the Second Home to Protect the View
As Chuaqui and Cooper gazed at the views, they realized the empty lot in front of them on Gower Point Road could be developed, blocking their sea view. So they bought the lot and built another, larger house with extensive decking to maximize the panorama. An engineered retaining wall with a corrugated metal fence separates the two properties.
Both homes are offered for sale together or individually, providing flexibility for buyers. The listing is held by Engel & Völkers Vancouver.
