IGA has reopened a grocery store on 142 Street in west Edmonton, returning to the same location it occupied for 60 years before closing two years ago. The store, a longtime neighborhood fixture, resumed operations this week, according to a report by Edmonton News.
Return to a Familiar Spot
The 142 Street location had been vacant since IGA shuttered its doors in 2024. The new store occupies the same building at 14220 142 Street NW, offering a familiar shopping experience for local residents. The reopening marks the end of a two-year absence for the brand in that area.
IGA, a franchise brand of Sobeys Inc., has multiple locations across Edmonton, but the 142 Street store holds particular significance due to its decades-long history. The store originally opened in the 1960s and served the community until its closure in 2024.
Community Response
Local residents have expressed enthusiasm about the store's return. "It's great to have IGA back in the neighborhood," said one shopper who asked not to be named. "We missed having a grocery store within walking distance."
The reopening restores a convenient shopping option for residents in the surrounding residential area. The store features a full-service grocery layout with fresh produce, meat, and dairy sections, along with a pharmacy and other amenities.
