Finch West LRT Shut Down, Eglinton Line Delays Up to 20 Minutes
Finch West LRT Shut Down, Eglinton Line Delays

Service on the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) has been suspended since 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, according to Toronto transit officials. Riders on the Eglinton line are also experiencing delays of up to 20 minutes, compounding commute challenges across the city.

Service Suspension Details

The Finch West LRT, which connects Humber College to the Finch West subway station, was halted due to what authorities described as a “mechanical issue.” No timeline for restoration has been provided, and shuttle buses have been deployed to accommodate affected passengers. Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins stated, “We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, but we advise riders to seek alternative routes.”

On the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, delays began around midday, with trains running at reduced speeds. The cause is attributed to signal problems near the Mount Dennis station. Riders reported wait times exceeding 20 minutes during peak afternoon hours.

Impact on Commuters

The disruptions have affected thousands of daily commuters, particularly those traveling between northwestern Toronto and the city center. “I waited over 30 minutes for a bus replacement,” said passenger Maria Santos, 34, who relies on the Finch West line for her commute to York University. “This is becoming a regular occurrence.”

Transit advocacy group TTC Riders criticized the lack of communication. “Riders need real-time updates, not just vague announcements,” said spokesperson Jessica Bell. “This affects people’s jobs and lives.”

Broader Transit Challenges

The incidents add to ongoing reliability concerns for Toronto’s LRT network, which has faced repeated technical glitches since opening. The Finch West line launched in 2024, while the Eglinton Crosstown opened in phases starting in 2023. Both have experienced service interruptions, prompting calls for improved maintenance and contingency planning.

Metrolinx has not confirmed when full service will resume. Updates are expected via social media and transit apps.
