OC Transpo Announces Service Reduction on O-Train Line 1 for Fleet Maintenance
OC Transpo has announced a temporary reduction in the number of trains operating on the O-Train Line 1, beginning Wednesday evening, as part of a maintenance program for the transit fleet. The decision comes after the Rideau Transit Group identified a technical issue with cartridge bearing assemblies in some of the older trains.
Maintenance Details and Safety Precautions
According to a memo sent to Ottawa City Council by Troy Charter, General Manager of Transit Services, the maintenance work is necessary due to a specific problem detected in the fleet. Flakes have begun breaking off the metal surface inside the axle bearings, creating pits that can expand over time. If left unaddressed, this condition could lead to cracks and potential bearing failure, posing safety risks.
As a precautionary measure, all trains with more than 100,000 kilometres of mileage will be removed from service to undergo repairs. The faulty parts will be replaced, and trains will be returned to service as maintenance is completed. OC Transpo emphasized that this step is being taken from an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of customers and employees.
