The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is implementing a significant operational change as it prepares for the upcoming launch of its new Anse-à-l'Orme branch this spring. Starting Friday, the network will introduce short-run trains that terminate at Bois-Franc station, marking a crucial testing phase for the system's expansion.
Testing Phase for New Branch
The REM has announced that during this testing period, some trains will operate exclusively between Brossard and Bois-Franc stations, while others will continue their full route to Deux-Montagnes station. This reconfiguration is designed to help operators master the complex scheduling system that determines precise arrival and departure times at each station, as well as the intervals between trains.
"This change will have a significant impact on all passengers across the network," the REM stated in its Wednesday announcement. The transit authority is urging passengers to check train directions carefully before boarding, particularly those planning to travel northwest of Bois-Franc station.
Service Frequency Increases
As part of the testing phase, service frequency will see notable improvements. During peak hours, trains between Brossard and Bois-Franc will arrive every three-and-a-half minutes, while service between Bois-Franc and Deux-Montagnes will operate on seven-minute intervals. Outside of rush hour, these frequencies will adjust to seven minutes for the Brossard-Bois-Franc segment and fifteen minutes for the Bois-Franc-Deux-Montagnes section.
These frequency patterns correspond directly to those planned for the official launch of the new A3 line to Anse-à-l'Orme, which remains scheduled for this spring according to REM officials.
Passenger Guidance and Procedures
For travelers whose destinations lie between Sunnybrooke and Deux-Montagnes stations, the REM advises selecting trains heading toward the A4 — Deux-Montagnes line. At Bois-Franc station, passengers on terminating trains can disembark and board the next available train toward Deux-Montagnes to continue their journey.
Trains heading toward Bois-Franc will stop at that station before turning back toward Brossard. The REM emphasizes that train directions are clearly displayed on station screens and announced onboard to help passengers navigate the temporary service changes.
Ongoing Service Considerations
It's important to note that service beyond Côte-de-Liesse station continues to be suspended after 9 p.m., a restriction that remains in effect during this testing period. The REM's announcement comes as the network works to optimize operations ahead of its significant expansion with the Anse-à-l'Orme branch.
