Windsor's Riverside Drive East Named Fourth-Worst Road

Windsor's Riverside Drive East has been ranked the fourth-worst road in Ontario's southwest region, according to the annual CAA Worst Roads list. The busy roadway, known for its potholes, congestion, and uneven surfaces, was surpassed only by roads in Sarnia, which dominated the regional leaderboard.

CAA's Annual Campaign Highlights Road Concerns

The CAA's campaign invites Ontarians to nominate roads in need of improvement, aiming to pressure government officials to prioritize infrastructure upgrades. Windsor roads have frequently appeared on the list over the years. This year, Hamilton's Barton Street East took the top provincial spot for the third consecutive time.

City's Response and Investments

In response to ongoing road quality issues, the city of Windsor allocated $163.8 million for road improvements in May, alongside $36.6 million for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and replacement. This represents the largest single-year investment in roads in the city's history. Part of this funding has already been used for mill and pave work on Riverside Drive from Glengarry Avenue to Devonshire Road, removing damaged asphalt and restoring the surface.

Riverside Drive East spans from Goyeau Street to Brighton Road, overlooking the Detroit River. It has long been notorious for potholes, poor maintenance, traffic congestion, and uneven surfaces. While this is not the first time Windsor has made the list, the city is making a concerted effort to address its road infrastructure.

Southwest Region Top 5

The southwest region includes Chatham-Kent Municipality, Essex County, and Lambton County. The top five worst roads in the region are:

  • Blackwell Sideroad, Sarnia
  • Errol Road East, Sarnia
  • Indian Road South, Sarnia
  • Riverside Drive East, Windsor
  • Vidal Street South, Sarnia
