University of Calgary Sikh Studies Program Expands Through Community Gala
Calgary Sikh Studies Program Expands via Community Gala

The University of Calgary's Sikh Studies program is poised for significant expansion following a successful fundraising gala that united community leaders, academics, and supporters from one of Calgary's largest diasporas. The event, held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the Empire Banquet Hall, demonstrated strong community commitment to advancing Sikh education and research at the university.

Community-Driven Academic Initiative

Cathy Billington, development director for the UCalgary Faculty of Arts, emphasized that the Sikh Studies program represents a community co-created initiative that has flourished through sustained partnership between the university and Calgary's Sikh community. "Thanks to the community support paired with matching funds from the University of Calgary, we've been able to establish six courses in Sikh Studies at the University of Calgary," Billington explained.

Tangible Program Achievements

The program has achieved remarkable milestones since receiving its first standalone gift in 2016, followed by a successful "Giving Day" in 2021. These contributions have directly supported the establishment of a four-year limited-term professorship dedicated to Sikh Studies, which has now been converted to a permanent faculty position due to overwhelming community support.

The program's impact includes:

  • Over 500 students enrolled in Sikh Studies courses
  • Dozens of community events hosted
  • Five community research-based initiatives launched
  • Creation of the Sikh Studies Endowment Fund

Future Expansion Goals

Looking forward, university officials aim to establish an endowed Sikh Studies Research Chair, which would represent a significant advancement for Sikh scholarship in Canada. Jaskaran Sandhu, a member of the Sikh Studies community advisory council, highlighted the importance of this initiative: "This is a rare opportunity to establish a world-class Sikh Studies chair right here in Calgary. It would create a space to research, share, and elevate Sikh history and contributions while strengthening cultural understanding across communities."

Community Advisory Positions

As a community-informed initiative, the program maintains advisory positions that allow community members to provide feedback and guidance to university administrators. This collaborative approach ensures the program remains responsive to community needs while maintaining academic rigor.

Political and Community Support

Former Calgary councillor and Calgary-Skyview MP George Chahal praised the initiative, noting its importance for Canadians interested in Sikh faith and culture. "I think it's a great initiative that community members have worked extremely hard to bring forward," Chahal said. "Today's a day of recognition, but a day of giving to support the Sikh Studies program at the University of Calgary to raise funds to make sure that we have a strong, vibrant program for the future."

The gala represents the latest chapter in a growing partnership between the University of Calgary and Calgary's Sikh community, demonstrating how community support can directly shape academic programming and create lasting educational resources for future generations.
