The Manitoba government has announced a $15 million investment to revitalize the historic Pantages Playhouse Theatre in Winnipeg. The funding, confirmed on Tuesday, aims to restore the iconic venue to its former glory, ensuring its continued role as a hub for performing arts in the province.
Preserving a Cultural Landmark
The Pantages Playhouse, a cherished cultural landmark in downtown Winnipeg, has been a cornerstone of the city's arts scene for over a century. Built in 1914, the theatre has hosted countless performances, from vaudeville shows to modern plays. However, years of wear and tear have taken a toll, necessitating significant repairs and upgrades.
Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the importance of preserving such heritage sites. "This investment is about more than just bricks and mortar; it's about honoring our history and investing in the future of our cultural community," he stated during the announcement.
Community Involvement
A community group has also unveiled a plan to support the restoration efforts. The group, which includes local artists and business leaders, aims to raise additional funds and coordinate volunteer initiatives. Their involvement underscores the widespread support for the theatre's revival.
Jon Hendricks, a spokesperson for the group, highlighted the collaborative spirit. "We are thrilled to see the government stepping up, but we know that true success comes from community engagement. We encourage everyone to get involved," he said.

The $15 million commitment will cover a range of improvements, including structural repairs, modernized seating, upgraded lighting and sound systems, and enhanced accessibility features. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with completion targeted for 2027. During the renovation, the theatre will remain partially open for select events, ensuring minimal disruption to the arts calendar.
