Edmonton Social Media Expert Transforms Fertility Journey Into Children's Book

Linda Hoang, a prominent Edmonton social media consultant and event planner, has channeled her personal decade-long fertility struggle into a groundbreaking children's book titled Miracle Baby, You're Finally Here! The book represents a heartfelt effort to normalize conversations about infertility and make family building discussions accessible to young children.

A Decade of Hope and Heartbreak

For nearly ten years, Hoang and her husband Mike navigated the challenging landscape of unexplained infertility. Their journey included multiple fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination, exploration of adoption options, and various herbal remedies. Despite their persistent efforts, answers remained elusive until a natural conception finally brought their long-awaited miracle baby.

"I still wanted to acknowledge this very challenging journey that so many other people walk," Hoang explains. "My hope with the book is to start those infertility conversations quite young and just make it feel like more of a natural part of families or family building."

Filling a Gap in Children's Literature

The inspiration for Hoang's book emerged from her own experience shopping for baby books during pregnancy. She discovered a significant gap in the market—while browsing through numerous options, she couldn't find any that authentically reflected her family's unique journey. Some books touched on themes of waiting and frustration, but none captured the complex reality of infertility struggles.

"One even started to talk about the frustration and waiting, but the punchline was like, we just weren't ready for you," Hoang recalls. "I'm like, no, that's not what it is."

Creative Challenges and Solutions

Writing a children's book about such a complex topic presented unique creative challenges for Hoang, whose professional background primarily involves social media consulting and event planning. She organizes popular Edmonton events including the Edmonton International Cat Festival and Chinatown Chow Down.

The children's picture book format required working within strict limitations—constrained word counts and simplified vocabulary while addressing sophisticated themes. Hoang collaborated with local illustrator Magdalena Duran Castillo to develop visual solutions that could convey complex concepts without overwhelming young readers.

"I wanted to represent those different paths that someone might take before conceiving a child," Hoang says. "But obviously, if it's a children's book, we don't want to be explaining necessarily in this book what IVF is."

Their creative partnership resulted in subtle visual cues within the illustrations—such as books about IVF and IUI on shelves in a doctor's office scene—while the accompanying text maintains child-friendly simplicity with lines like "There are many ways for families to grow."

From Personal Blog to Published Author

Hoang's writing journey extends back to childhood, having maintained blogs since age twelve. Throughout her fertility struggles, she documented her experiences openly, sharing both the physical and emotional challenges of various treatments with her online community.

The book itself is written in rhyming verse that traces the emotional arc of a couple dreaming of expanding their family—capturing the initial joy and excitement, the subsequent disappointment and frustration during the waiting period, and ultimately the overwhelming joy of their miracle's arrival.

By transforming her personal narrative into accessible children's literature, Hoang aims to create representation for families whose stories don't follow conventional paths and to foster understanding about the diverse ways families come together.
