St. Pius X High School Presents Original Play Celebrating Irish Heritage
St. Pius X High School's Cappies production of To Have the Confidence of a Man served as a powerful ode to the beauty and complexity of Irish culture through an original student-written play. The production, which premiered on March 12, 2026, explored timeless themes of love, defiance, and societal pressure through the lens of Celtic mythology.
A Student-Written Adaptation of Irish Folklore
Written by student director Maeve Ludmer, the two-act play was inspired by an old Irish folktale set in Northern Ireland. The story follows headstrong and erudite Maeve Rua McQuillan, who defies her father's wishes by rejecting an arranged marriage to an older man in favor of fellow rebel Reginald Ó Catháin. As punishment for her defiance, Maeve's father imprisons her within Dunluce Castle, setting the stage for a dramatic exploration of love, tragedy, and what it truly means to possess "the confidence of a man."
Ludmer's script demonstrated months of refinement and professional craftsmanship, incorporating thought-provoking soliloquies, witty exchanges, and feminist themes into her adaptation of the Celtic legend. The production represented a significant achievement in student creativity and collaboration.
Compelling Performances Bring Characters to Life
At the forefront of the narrative, Bella Menjivar delivered a strong performance as Maeve Rua McQuillan. With regal speech patterns and a self-assured demeanor, Menjivar effectively embodied the elegant damsel's assertiveness. Her animated facial expressions and bold physicality communicated a wide range of emotions, from storming off in anger to expressing harrowing pain through banshee-like wails.
Em Roach portrayed Maeve's lover, the charming Reginald Ó Catháin, balancing overt sarcasm in his line delivery with hidden vulnerability during intense monologues. The supporting cast added depth to the production, with Favour Agbesua's portrayal of the arrogant Lord Ó Catháin and Elianna Johnson's transformation from reserved wife to grief-stricken mother as Lady Ó Catháin.
George Al-Bsharaa provided comedic relief as the blissfully oblivious Brian Ó Briain, using expert timing and flashy body language to create several humorous moments that alleviated the play's somber mood.
