Cosplayers at Fredericton's Animaritime convention faced extreme heat on Saturday, with temperatures soaring above 30°C. Organizers reported that despite the heat, attendance remained strong as fans flocked to the annual pop culture event.
Heat challenges for costumed attendees
Many cosplayers wore heavy costumes, including full-body suits and masks, making the heat a significant challenge. "You got to bring some fans," said attendee Sarah Mitchell, who dressed as a character from a popular anime series. She used a handheld fan to cool down between photo sessions.
The convention center provided water stations and designated cooling areas to help attendees manage the temperatures. Organizer John Davis noted, "We've increased the number of water fountains and set up misting fans in high-traffic areas."
Vendors and activities
Vendors offered a wide range of items and merchandise for fans to buy, including artwork, figurines, and clothing. The event also featured panel discussions, gaming tournaments, and costume contests. Despite the heat, many participants expressed enthusiasm for the convention.
"It's worth it to meet fellow fans and show off our costumes," said cosplayer Alex Tran, who wore a layered armor costume. He added that he took frequent breaks and stayed hydrated.
Safety measures and community response
Medical staff were on standby to assist with heat-related issues. The Fredericton Fire Department provided additional support, offering cooling stations and advice on heat safety. Attendees praised the organizers for their proactive approach.
"They really thought about our comfort," said Maria Lopez, a first-time attendee. "I was worried about the heat, but the cooling areas made a big difference."
The convention continues through Sunday, with slightly cooler temperatures forecasted. Organizers encourage attendees to continue taking precautions against the heat.
