Ryan Coogler's X-Files Reboot Pilot Set to Begin Filming in Vancouver This May
The highly anticipated pilot for Hulu's reboot of the beloved sci-fi series The X-Files is scheduled to commence production in Vancouver starting in early May. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Sinners and Black Panther, the project will shoot for approximately one month in the city.
New Cast and Creative Team Announced
Starring in the pilot are Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, who will portray new FBI special agents tasked with investigating unexplained phenomena. The characters are described as unlikely partners, bringing fresh dynamics to the iconic franchise. Coogler is not only directing but also wrote the pilot script, with original series creator Chris Carter serving as executive producer.
Vancouver holds a significant history with The X-Files, as the original series filmed its first five seasons there from 1993 to 1998 before relocating to Los Angeles. The show returned to Vancouver for its tenth and eleventh seasons in 2015 and 2017, making this reboot a homecoming of sorts for the franchise.
Insights from Coogler and Anderson
In an interview on Last Podcast on the Left last April, Coogler expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary. We're gonna try to make something really great and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones."
Original star Gillian Anderson, who played Agent Scully, recently commented during an Awesome Con appearance that she has read the pilot script and found it "really good" and "f—ing cool." She also mentioned having "a few conversations" with Coogler, though it remains unclear if she or David Duchovny will appear in the reboot.
Production Details and Future Prospects
The pilot marks the latest chapter in the X-Files legacy, which includes two feature films and multiple television seasons. With filming set to begin in May, fans eagerly await further updates on casting, plot details, and potential series greenlighting by Hulu. The combination of Coogler's visionary direction and Vancouver's cinematic backdrop promises a thrilling revival for this classic sci-fi series.
