Vancouver's Juno-Winning Metal Band Archspire Aims for Guinness World Record
Vancouver extreme metal act Archspire, fresh off their 2022 Juno Award win for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, has set an ambitious new goal beyond creating some of the most technically demanding death metal ever recorded. The band is now pursuing official recognition as the world's fastest rock band in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Pursuing Official Recognition for Breakneck Speed
Lead singer Oli Peters revealed that the band has already contacted Guinness World Records about establishing a category for their blistering musical velocity. "We did actually reach out to the Guinness Book of World Records, but we are still waiting to hear back," said Peters. "There are so many strange categories where people squeak in with weird talents that we're expecting to hear back any day now."
Peters added with characteristic humor, "But maybe there isn't enough interest in our music for them to care and we would stand a better chance playing really fast Irish folk music."
The Evolution of Extreme Technical Precision
Originally formed as Defenstrated in 2007, Archspire has spent nearly two decades refining their distinctive brand of breakneck-paced, surgically precise heavy metal. Each successive album has represented a progression into faster and more proficient playing, culminating in their latest independent release Too Fast to Die.
The band's current lineup includes Spencer Moore, Tobi Morelli, Oliver Rae Aleron, Dean Lamb, and Jared Smith. Their music, characterized by what guitarist Tobi Morelli describes simply as "stressful" to perform, nevertheless delivers what Morelli calls "really exciting" and "really rewarding" experiences when everything comes together onstage.
Independent Release and Creative Control
Too Fast to Die marks Archspire's first album released independently from their longtime label Season of Mist. The band financed the project through a Kickstarter campaign, meticulously breaking down costs for their supporters throughout the process. According to Peters, while the independent route proved "somewhat arduous," the band is ultimately satisfied with their creative control and the final results.
To promote the album, Archspire produced slick mini movie-style videos for tracks including Carrion Ladder and Red Goliath. Morelli notes these visual productions serve as excellent introductions to the Archspire sound and help attract audiences to their explosive live performances.
Canadian Tour and Diverse Lineup
Fans will have ample opportunity to experience Archspire's musical mayhem firsthand during their ongoing Long Roads Big Loads Canadian tour. The band hits Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre on June 6, with tickets currently available through Ticketmaster.
For this tour, Archspire is bringing support acts Undeath, Crown Magnetar, and Mutilation Barbecue, creating what Morelli describes as "a bit like bringing an entire sub-genre scene to each show." The band deliberately curates diverse lineups to provide what Peters calls "well-rounded entertainment" for concertgoers.
"We want to bring in people who might already be fans of us to come and experience other sub-genres in the extreme metal zone that they haven't heard," explained Morelli. "Ultimately, we want every band to be awesome and for us to be playing a show that we would also want to go to."
Beyond Music: Educational Publications
While album sales, concert proceeds, and merchandise remain primary economic drivers for the band, Archspire has expanded into educational publications. The band has released complete guitar and bass transcriptions of their albums Bleed the Future, Relentless Mutation, and The Lucid Collective. These detailed musical scores have proven popular items on the band's website, allowing aspiring musicians to study their complex compositions.
Despite operating in what Peters acknowledges is "such a niche market," the band finds satisfaction in pushing creative boundaries. "Pushing our boundaries, physically and mentally in this music, and then still coming out with something we are proud of and would listen to is worth it," said Peters. "Because it is such a niche market, if we can break through to any listeners, it's a win for us."
Whether or not Guinness World Records establishes a category for their extraordinary velocity, Archspire continues to redefine the limits of extreme metal while maintaining their commitment to both musical excellence and fan experience.
