A water advisory has been issued for Zeiner Beach on Pigeon Lake, warning the public to avoid swimming or wading in the water due to elevated bacteria levels. The advisory was announced by Alberta Health Services on June 26, 2026, following water quality tests that revealed higher-than-acceptable counts of fecal bacteria, including E. coli.
Bacteria Levels Prompt Health Warning
The advisory applies specifically to Zeiner Beach, a popular recreational spot on the lake's eastern shore, located about 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. AHS officials stated that the elevated bacteria levels could pose health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of exposure may include skin rashes, ear infections, and gastrointestinal illness.
According to AHS, the advisory will remain in effect until further notice, with follow-up water sampling scheduled to monitor conditions. Swimmers are urged to avoid any contact with the water, and pet owners are advised to keep animals away as well.
Ongoing Monitoring and Public Safety
This is not the first time Zeiner Beach has faced a water advisory; similar warnings have been issued in previous summers after heavy rainfall, which can wash contaminants into the lake. AHS recommends that residents check the agency's website for updates before planning trips to the beach. Local officials also remind the public that other beaches on Pigeon Lake may not be affected, but caution is advised.
