The Edmonton Humane Society is set to begin a major renovation of its public animal adoption gallery on April 27, 2026, with construction expected to be completed by fall 2026. This marks the first significant upgrade since the shelter opened its current location in northwest Edmonton in 2009.
First renovation since 2009
Liza Sunley, CEO of the Edmonton Humane Society, expressed excitement about the project. "We're so lucky that we have an amazing shelter. It is time to do a refresh that gives us the opportunity to continue to be at that leading edge of animal adoption," she said.
The renovations will include new dog life rooms, a dedicated kitten gallery, and refreshed visitor spaces. The project also aims to address areas of wear and tear that have developed over the past 15 years.
Safety and well-being of animals
Sunley emphasized that the society will prioritize the safety and well-being of animals throughout the construction process. "We're doing a good job of being able to keep the people and the animals safe during the construction," she said. "We're doing what we can to minimize noise and dust and things like that. The company we're working with is being really helpful to make sure we're still able to care for the animals during the disruption."
Improved living spaces
The renovation will create more accommodating living spaces for animals, whether or not they are ready for adoption. "While we're doing that work, we're also taking the opportunity to make the spaces even better for the animals," Sunley added. "So giving them that privacy and agency to have some choice in whether they want to be viewed by the public, and having that dedicated space for the kittens. It's really a step up in terms of the care that we can provide."
Temporary changes during construction
Some areas of the gallery will be temporarily unavailable during construction, and there will be changes to how visitors move through the shelter and where they meet animals. Sunley described the renovation as "a long-term investment in animal well-being, comfort and the visitor experience." She noted that the project is made possible by community support and expressed gratitude for ongoing contributions.
Funding and adoption event
The society has yet to fully fund the $2.4-million project, with $545,000 still needed. To help animals find homes during construction, the Edmonton Humane Society will host a special adoption event from May 1 to 10, featuring reduced adoption fees on all animals.
