Service on Toronto's Line 6 Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) resumed on Wednesday morning after being suspended since Tuesday due to a communication issue, according to the Toronto News Service. The suspension began early Tuesday and affected commuters along the Finch West corridor, with shuttle buses deployed to mitigate disruptions.
Suspension Details and Cause
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) reported that the service halt was caused by a communication system failure between trains and the control center. This issue prevented safe operation of the line, leading to a full suspension from Tuesday morning until the problem was resolved. TTC officials stated that technicians worked through the night to identify and fix the fault.
"The safety of our passengers is our top priority," said a TTC spokesperson. "We apologize for the inconvenience and thank riders for their patience."
Impact on Commuters
The Line 6 Finch West LRT serves approximately 15,000 daily riders, connecting Finch West Station on Line 1 Yonge-University to Humber College. During the suspension, shuttle buses ran between Finch West Station and Humber College, though delays were reported due to increased traffic. Commuters expressed frustration over the lack of advance notice, with some reporting waits of up to 45 minutes for shuttle buses.
"I was late for work because of this," said one commuter. "They need to do better."
Service Restoration
By 9:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, the TTC confirmed that the communication issue had been resolved and regular service resumed. Trains began running at reduced frequency initially to ensure system stability, with full schedules restored by mid-morning. The TTC is investigating the root cause of the failure to prevent future occurrences.
The Finch West LRT, which opened in 2023, has faced intermittent technical issues, though this is the first major suspension in 2026. The TTC has not indicated whether compensation will be offered to affected riders.
