Golf Course Manager Optimistic After Flooding
Dave Eveleigh, manager of Shanty Bay Golf & Country Club in Oro-Medonte, Ontario, says things are looking up after the course was submerged underwater last week. The flooding, caused by heavy rains and rising water levels, left the course in a precarious state just before the opening season. Despite the setback, Eveleigh expressed surprise and determination: 'I can't believe we're in this position, but we are working hard to get the course ready.'
Cleanup and Recovery Efforts
The flooding affected multiple fairways and greens, requiring extensive cleanup. Staff have been working around the clock to remove debris, assess damage, and repair irrigation systems. Eveleigh noted that the community has rallied together to support the course, with volunteers and local businesses offering assistance. The goal is to open as scheduled, though some areas may remain closed temporarily.
Community Support and Future Plans
Eveleigh emphasized the importance of the golf course to the local community, both as a recreational venue and an economic driver. He thanked everyone who has contributed to the recovery efforts. Looking ahead, the club plans to implement better drainage solutions to mitigate future flooding risks. Despite the challenges, Eveleigh remains hopeful: 'We've been through tough times before, and we'll get through this one too.'
