Grassi Lakes Closed After Rockslide: Alberta Parks

A rockslide in the Grassi Lakes area has forced Alberta Parks to close multiple trails and sections of highway, citing dangerous conditions.

Closures Announced

On Wednesday, the agency announced the closure of several areas, including Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, Grassi Lakes Day Use, Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail, Grassi Lakes Upper Trail, Reclaimer Trail, Riders of Rohan Trail, and Spray Lakes Road.

Grassi Lakes Upper, Grassi Lakes Interpretive, and Reclaimer Trail are all closed. Riders of Rohan remains open and accessible.

Highway Closure

The highway is closed in both directions between the Grassi Lakes turnoff and the top of the hill. Officials stated, “A rockslide has resulted in dangerous conditions for all road users. Unsupported rock remains above the road and could result in a second slide.”

Uncertain Timeline

“As area assessments are ongoing, the timeline for repairs and reopening remains uncertain. Please respect all closures and stay clear of the area,” parks officials added.

Access to Nearby Areas

The closure affects access to several day-use areas nearby, including Ha Ling Peak, Miner’s Peak, East End of Rundle, and Goat Creek trailheads. These areas can still be accessed from Highway 40 South and the open portion of Spray Lakes Road northbound via Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, but visitors should prepare for longer travel times.
