The Moncton Fire Department is ramping up preparations for the 2026 fire season after a record-breaking 2025 that saw unprecedented wildfire activity across New Brunswick. Firefighters are still reflecting on the lessons learned from last year's devastating Irishtown fire, which tested the limits of local resources.
Record-Breaking 2025 Fire Season
Last year, New Brunswick experienced one of its most challenging fire seasons on record, with multiple large fires threatening communities and natural areas. The Irishtown fire, which broke out on Aug. 12, 2025, required a massive response from firefighters across the province. Images from the scene show crews battling flames that consumed large swaths of forest and forced evacuations.
Preparation for 2026
This year, the Moncton Fire Department is taking proactive steps to ensure readiness. Chief officials have emphasized the importance of early planning, equipment checks, and public education. The department is also coordinating with provincial agencies to secure additional resources if needed.
“We learned a lot from last year,” said a department spokesperson. “Our crews worked tirelessly, and we’re using that experience to improve our response strategies for the upcoming season.”
The department is urging residents to take precautions, such as clearing dry brush from properties and following local fire bans. A campfire ban is already in effect in parts of the province, similar to measures being implemented in British Columbia.
Community Resilience
The record-breaking 2025 season highlighted the importance of community resilience. Many residents in affected areas, including those near Irishtown, have since taken steps to better protect their homes. The fire department is offering resources and advice to help homeowners create defensible spaces.
As the 2026 fire season approaches, the Moncton Fire Department remains vigilant, ready to protect lives and property from the threat of wildfires.
