A rare two-colored lobster, caught by fishermen off the coast of Cape Cod, has been donated to a local aquarium. The split-color crustacean, which displays a distinct line dividing its shell into two hues, was discovered in a lobster trap and brought to the Wellfleet Shellfish Company in Eastham, Massachusetts, on April 17, 2026.
Unique Find
Such lobsters are extremely uncommon, occurring in approximately one in 50 million lobsters. The condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism, results in a split coloration that is often half orange or red and half dark green or brown. The specimen was quickly recognized as a valuable addition for educational and research purposes.
