Sask. Ombudsman Sets Record in 2025, Urges Better Wildfire Response
Sask. Ombudsman Record Requests, Urges Wildfire Response

The Saskatchewan Ombudsman, Sharon Pratchler, announced that her office received a record number of requests in 2025, prompting a call for enhanced provincial response and support for evacuees fleeing wildfires in the northern region of the province.

Record Number of Requests

Speaking to reporters on June 10, 2025, Pratchler highlighted the unprecedented volume of inquiries and complaints directed at her office this year. The surge in requests reflects growing public concern over the handling of emergency situations, particularly the ongoing wildfires that have forced numerous communities to evacuate.

Investigation into Wildfire Response

Pratchler confirmed that her office will conduct a thorough investigation into the provincial government's response to the wildfires and the support provided to evacuees. The investigation aims to identify gaps in emergency management and ensure that affected residents receive adequate assistance during such crises.

“The scale of the wildfires this year has been overwhelming, and it is critical that we examine how the province has responded to the needs of evacuees,” Pratchler stated. “Our goal is to ensure that lessons are learned and that future responses are more effective and compassionate.”

Calls for Improvement

The Ombudsman's call for improved wildfire evacuee response comes amid reports of insufficient resources, delayed evacuations, and inadequate shelter conditions. Pratchler emphasized the need for better coordination between provincial agencies, local authorities, and Indigenous communities, which have been disproportionately affected by the fires.

“We must prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents, especially those in vulnerable situations,” she added. “This includes ensuring timely evacuations, access to essential services, and clear communication throughout the process.”

The investigation is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with findings and recommendations to be released later in the year. Pratchler urged the public to come forward with any information or experiences that could help improve the system.
