Sunscreen dispensers available in Seguin Township for skin cancer prevention
Sunscreen dispensers arrive in Seguin Township

Seguin Township has launched a new public health initiative by installing free sunscreen dispensers in several community parks, according to a June 23 announcement. The program, supported by the Save Your Skin Foundation, aims to reduce skin cancer rates by providing accessible sun protection.

Dispenser locations and usage

The dispensers are placed at high-traffic outdoor areas including the Seguin Township municipal office, Humphrey Community Centre, and Orrville Community Centre. Residents and visitors can use the dispensers at no cost during park hours. Each unit contains SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen, which is refilled regularly by township staff.

“We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful parks safely,” said a township spokesperson. “This small step can make a big difference in preventing skin cancer.”

Community and health impact

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in Canada, with over 80,000 cases diagnosed annually, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. The initiative aligns with Ontario’s broader public health goals to increase sun safety awareness. Similar programs in other municipalities have shown increased sunscreen use among park visitors.

The Save Your Skin Foundation, a national nonprofit focused on melanoma prevention, provided the dispensers and educational materials. “Making sunscreen freely available removes a barrier to protection,” said a foundation representative. “We applaud Seguin Township for prioritizing community health.”

Future expansion

Officials plan to monitor usage and may add more dispensers in other parks if demand grows. The township also encourages residents to adopt sun-safe habits, such as wearing hats and seeking shade during peak UV hours.
