A temporary partial trail closure is now in effect at Collavino Conservation Area through July to give turtle nests the best chance of survival. The closure targets areas where Blanding's Turtles, a species at risk, are known to nest.
Why the Closure Is Necessary
Blanding's Turtles are one of the species found at Collavino Conservation Area. Their nests are vulnerable to disturbance from human activity. By closing sections of the trail, officials aim to reduce trampling and predation risks, allowing hatchlings to emerge safely.
According to the conservation authority, the closure is a seasonal measure implemented during the nesting and incubation period. Similar closures have been used in previous years with positive results.
Impact on Visitors
Visitors to Collavino Conservation Area will still have access to most trails, but signs will indicate which sections are off-limits. The conservation authority encourages visitors to respect the closures and stay on designated paths to avoid disturbing wildlife.
“We ask for the public's cooperation to help protect these vulnerable turtles,” said a spokesperson. “The temporary inconvenience ensures the survival of future generations.”
Broader Conservation Efforts
The closure is part of a larger effort to protect Blanding's Turtles, which are listed as threatened under Ontario's Endangered Species Act. Habitat loss and road mortality are major threats to their population.
Conservation authorities monitor nesting sites and may install protective cages or relocate nests if necessary. Public education campaigns also aim to reduce accidental harm to turtles during nesting season.
