Edmonton Braces for More Thunderstorms After Record June Rainfall
Edmonton Braces for More Thunderstorms After Record Rain

Edmonton could see more thunder and lightning storms this summer after a June of record-breaking rainfall, according to Environment Canada. The city has already endured 265 mm of rain, breaking a 112-year-old record.

Record Rainfall Fuels Storm Potential

Over the weekend, Edmonton surpassed the previous June rainfall record of 216.5 mm set in 1914. The current total ranks second all-time for any month, behind only the 282 mm recorded in July 1901.

“The more moisture you have in the ground, the higher chances you have for thunderstorms. It’s like adding more fuel, or adding more ingredients in place to have more severe weather and thunderstorms,” said Brian Proctor, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Monday Night Storm Brings Lightning Strikes

A thunder and lightning storm hit Edmonton and parts of the Capital region on Monday, June 29, 2026, bringing 160 lightning strikes that hit the ground. The storm affected areas including Stony Plain, St. Albert, and Fort Saskatchewan, with some reports of hail.

“It was an active pattern, but nothing too out of the normal,” Proctor added.

Continued Storm Risk This Week

There is a 30 per cent chance of rain on Tuesday night with another thunderstorm risk. On Wednesday, Canada Day, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon with a high of 20 C. Rain is possible each day for the rest of the week.

Impact on Sports and Recreation

The record rainfall has forced the closure of city sports fields and ball diamonds due to saturation. Minor and recreation sports leagues have seen cancellations of games and practices across the city.

Golf courses in Edmonton and the Capital region have also faced challenges, with some forced to shut down last week due to flooding.
