Residents in Beaumont, Alberta, are being asked to immediately stop all non-essential water use after heavy rainfall over the weekend pushed the city's wastewater system to capacity, leading to localized flooding and sewer backups.
Emergency Alert Issued
An Alberta Emergency Alert was issued at 12:36 p.m. on Sunday for the city of Beaumont and Leduc County. The alert warned of ongoing flooding and sewer backups throughout the community, located approximately 28 kilometers south of Edmonton.
Just after 11 a.m., the City of Beaumont issued a water supply alert, asking residents to refrain from showering, flushing toilets, using laundry machines and dishwashers, and any other non-essential indoor water use.
City Urges Cooperation to Ease System Pressure
“The City is asking everyone to cut back on water use right away to help ease pressure on the system,” the alert stated. “If pressures continue, backups will continue throughout other parts of the city.”
The alert emphasized that while heavy rain is the primary cause of the overflows, reducing indoor water use can significantly mitigate further damage. “These steps help reduce the load on the wastewater system. While heavy rain is the main cause, every bit of reduced indoor use helps reduce the risk of flooding and backups,” the alert added.
Heavy Rain Overwhelms Infrastructure
The heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has pushed the city's wastewater system to capacity, resulting in localized flooding and sewer backups. The City of Beaumont and Leduc County continue to monitor the situation closely.
