Central Alberta Flood Risk: 60mm Rain Expected

Central Alberta is bracing for significant flooding after Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning, predicting up to 60 millimetres of rain over the weekend. The warning covers areas including Edmonton, Red Deer, and surrounding communities, with the heaviest rainfall expected between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

Recent Flooding in Tofield

The warning comes just days after flooding in Tofield, Alta., where water filled the parking lot of the Beaver Hill Motel on June 22, 2026. Evan Klippenstein of CTV News Edmonton captured images of the flooding, highlighting the vulnerability of the region to heavy precipitation.

Impacts and Precautions

Environment Canada warns that the saturated ground and swollen waterways could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to clear drainage ditches and avoid driving through flooded roads. The rainfall is expected to taper off by Sunday evening, but river levels may remain high into early next week.
