The City of Edmonton is planning a controlled burn at Jan Reimer Park on Monday, weather permitting. The Terwillegar Park Footbridge and nearby trails will be closed as wildfire crews manage the operation. Smoke is expected to be visible from mid-morning to late afternoon, but officials urge residents not to panic.
Details of the Prescribed Burn
According to a news release issued Friday, firefighters and equipment will be on-site to monitor the burn and minimize smoke impacts on nearby areas. The city emphasized that the burn will only proceed if weather conditions are favorable for safe fire and smoke management.
Why Prescribed Burns Are Conducted
Prescribed burns are a key tactic in Edmonton's efforts to prevent wildfires. They help remove accumulated wildfire fuel, such as dry vegetation, reducing the risk of high-intensity fires. Additionally, these burns benefit the environment by releasing nutrients into the ecosystem, promoting biodiversity.
Jan Reimer Park, previously known as Oleskiw River Valley Park, is a 193-acre green space located in the west end, south of the Fort Edmonton Footbridge and adjacent to the Edmonton Country Club.
Wildfire Strategy in Edmonton
The city has been developing a holistic strategy to address wildfires, as wildfire seasons have been starting earlier and extreme fires have become more common due to climate change. Seven of the 12 driest years on record in Edmonton have occurred since 2000. With over 7,400 hectares of wildland urban interface, the river valley is the main wildfire corridor, but grasslands along major roadways also pose risks. In the past six years, the city has responded to more than 2,000 grassfires.
Regional Preparedness
Other municipalities and the provincial government are also taking early measures. Leduc County and Sturgeon County have implemented fire restrictions, and Alberta Forestry Minister Todd Loewen is scheduled to announce the province's wildfire readiness on Monday.
