Flight 1076 had taken off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at about 7:50 p.m. local time and was preparing to land at Chicago Midway International Airport less than two hours later when the aircraft “made contact with a firework while on descent,” a Delta spokesperson told the Toronto Sun.
No Injuries Reported
The flight, which was carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, “landed safely and taxied to the gate,” the spokesperson said, adding that no one was injured. The Airbus A319 was inspected by mechanics and no damage was found, the airline said.
Pilot Describes ‘Big Bang’
In an audio recording published online by LiveATC.net that was shared widely online, the pilot described feeling “a big bang.” “Tower, we just had a firework hit our plane, Delta 1076. We’re continuing,” the pilot said in the audio clip. “We just heard the bang on the plane, so we’ll have to take a look at it when we get to the gate,” he continued. “We’re hoping it was just a mortar that went off underneath, but definitely felt a big bang.”
ATC Warnings Issued
Prior to the incident, controllers can be heard warning about fireworks present. “Delta 1076… use caution, there are multiple homes near the approach end shooting off fireworks,” one air traffic controller said, per the BBC. “There have been multiple reports as you can imagine,” they added. “The city is aware. They said they would notify the Chicago police, but you know, I don’t know what they will do.”
Investigation Underway
The Chicago Police Department told the BBC that the aircraft “was struck by an unknown object” which caused “minor paint damage.” The incident took place at an altitude of 200 to 250 feet at 8:33 p.m. local time, according to the recording. The FAA is investigating.
Resident Describes Non-Stop Fireworks
Christina Bernabe, a resident who has lived next to Midway for more than 20 years, said fireworks were going off non-stop on Independence Day. “Maybe at least 20 per minute I would say, at least,” she told WBBM, adding she couldn’t believe one hit a landing plane. “God forbid a plane, something happens, and lands on a house or on the block,” she added. “Was really shocked. Glad everyone is OK. Definitely a bit frightening.”
