Edmonton Area Golf Courses and Sports Fields Hit by Record June Rainfall
Edmonton Sports Fields Flooded by Record June Rainfall

Near-record June rainfall has turned Edmonton's outdoor sports season into a scheduling nightmare, flooding golf courses, postponing games, and disrupting minor sports leagues.

300 Soccer Games Postponed

Mario Charpentier, president of Edmonton Minor Soccer Association, described the situation as an absolute nightmare. He said that last weekend alone, over 300 games had to be postponed, creating a severe backlog. Community league games must be completed by a deadline, and Charpentier noted there is no way to play those missed games. To determine playoff and provincial positioning, teams will resort to penalty shootouts this week, a solution that Charpentier acknowledged is not ideal but is the only fair way to meet deadlines.

Record Rainfall Data

Environment Canada meteorologist Chloe Katsademas confirmed that Edmonton has received 203 millimetres of rain this month, the second-highest June total on record. The rainiest June was in 1914 with 216.5 millimetres. With more rain expected this weekend, Katsademas said it is possible to approach or exceed that record. She also noted that the current amount is the fourth-highest for any month, with the record being 282 millimetres in July 1901.

Impact on Golf Courses

Golf courses across the Edmonton region have been forced to close temporarily. Adam Pederson, general manager of the Fort Saskatchewan Golf and Curling Club, said the course opened early Saturday but shut down at noon when a big storm hit. A creek winding through the nine-hole course has flooded almost every hole, making it unplayable. The course has not reopened since.

Community Frustration

Charpentier noted that while city fields are closed, they will allow shootouts to determine playoff positioning. He has received 40 to 50 emails complaining about the situation, and while he understands the frustration, he emphasized that with so many games behind, there is little that can be done. He compared this year's rain to previous summers affected by smoke, which allowed for catch-up, but said he has never seen this amount of rain.
