Spring flooding is intensifying across Saskatchewan, prompting highway closures and emergency measures as water levels rise near several communities. The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (WSA) has identified Meadow Lake, La Ronge, Prince Albert, Battleford, and Tisdale among the areas experiencing significant flooding and ice jamming.
High Flow Advisory Issued
Last week, the WSA issued a high flow advisory stretching from Buffalo Narrows to the Yorkton area, according to CEO Shawn Jaques during a media call on Thursday. Jaques explained that an above-normal snowpack in northern Saskatchewan, combined with a cold, wet spring and slow melting, created ideal conditions for flooding. Subsequent warm spells triggered rapid snowmelt, leading to increased water flows.
Current Conditions and Concerns
Recent cooler temperatures have temporarily stalled water level rises. Jaques noted that most of the province has likely passed peak flows, but concerns remain for the northern Saskatchewan River basin. Bill Pacholka from the Ministry of Highways reported that Highway 304 southwest of Meadow Lake and Highway 310 near Foam Lake have been closed due to water covering the roadways.
Pacholka stated that repair crews are already assessing the damage. In emergencies, temporary repairs will be made quickly, followed by permanent fixes, or local detours may be established. He emphasized that the province is fully prepared with equipment and personnel to respond to changing conditions.
Community Responses
In coordination with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA), WSA officials are working with communities to protect homes. Tyler Harrison, SPSA emergency services officer, said crews have been filling sandbags in Meadow Lake. As of Thursday, the community of St. Louis did not require SPSA assistance.
Jaques noted that southern parts of the province received up to 30 centimeters of snow, which is beneficial for soil moisture. He recommends residents monitor stream flows via the WSA website. Pacholka advises motorists to check the highway hotline for updates, as conditions can change rapidly.
