Calgary Launches Branching Out 2026: Apply for Free Trees to Boost Urban Canopy
Calgary's Branching Out 2026: Apply for Free Trees This Week

Calgary's Branching Out 2026 Program Opens Applications for Free Trees

Starting this week, Calgarians have the opportunity to enhance their yards and contribute to the city's green future. The City of Calgary has launched the Branching Out 2026 tree program, offering residents up to two trees to plant on their private property. This initiative aims to distribute 10,000 trees this year alone, as part of a broader effort to expand the urban tree canopy and combat environmental challenges.

Program Goals and Environmental Benefits

The Branching Out 2026 program is designed to address multiple environmental issues in Calgary. By increasing tree coverage, the city hopes to cool open spaces during the summer months, reduce soil erosion, and improve both air and water quality. Additionally, the initiative supports biodiversity by introducing a variety of native and ornamental tree species. In 2024, Calgary's tree canopy coverage was measured at 9.62 percent, and through sustained efforts like this program, the city aims to reach 16 percent coverage by 2060.

How to Apply and Key Details

Registration for the program opens on a staggered basis throughout April, organized by city quadrants to manage demand effectively:

  • Northwest Calgary: Opens Tuesday at 10 a.m.
  • Northeast Calgary: Opens April 14
  • Southeast Calgary: Opens April 21
  • Southwest Calgary: Opens April 28

To participate, residents must first complete the city's Right Tree, Right Location online learning module, which educates on proper tree selection and placement. Each address is limited to one registration, with the option to request up to two trees. However, due to high popularity, registration does not guarantee tree receipt, as availability is limited.

Tree Selection and Pickup Information

The program offers a diverse range of tree species, including more than 10 types such as Bur Oak, Linden, Sensation Maple, and Trembling Aspen. Conifer options include Austrian Pine, Larch, and Ponderosa Pine, while ornamental choices feature varieties like Dakota Pinnacle Birch, Gladiator Crabapple, and Tree Lilac.

Pickup schedules are divided by region:

  • North Calgary: Pickup at Whitehorn Transit Station Parking lot (3914 34th St. N.E.) on May 30-31 for northwest and June 6-7 for northeast.
  • South Calgary: Pickup at Douglas Glen Transit Station Parking lot (11411 29th St. S.E.) on June 13-14 for southeast and June 20-21 for southwest.

All trees will be provided in five-gallon pots, with heights varying by species. Free mulch will be available while supplies last, and participants are asked to bring their own containers for collection. Trees that are not picked up will be offered to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Expanding Impact and Future Outlook

This year's program has doubled the number of available trees compared to previous years, reflecting its growing popularity and the city's commitment to urban forestry. Residents are responsible for planting the trees on their property, as the city will not provide planting services. By engaging the community in this hands-on effort, Calgary not only beautifies neighborhoods but also fosters a collective responsibility toward environmental stewardship. The Branching Out 2026 initiative stands as a key component in Calgary's strategy to create a greener, more resilient urban landscape for generations to come.
