Toronto police have charged 30-year-old Ashraful Alam with five counts of sexual assault following a series of alleged attacks on women aboard the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) system in the downtown core. The incidents occurred between June 27 and July 3, 2026, targeting five separate victims.
Details of the Alleged Assaults
According to investigators, Alam approached women on TTC vehicles and at stations, engaging them before committing the assaults. The attacks took place at various locations including subway trains, streetcars, and bus stops. Police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Detective Constable Sarah Thompson stated, “We are urging anyone with information or who may have been a victim to contact us. These incidents are deeply concerning, and we are committed to ensuring public safety on transit.”
Arrest and Charges
Alam was arrested on July 3 and appeared in court on July 4. He has been charged with five counts of sexual assault. The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.
Toronto police have released a photo of Alam and are asking the public for any additional information. They are also reviewing transit surveillance footage to identify any further incidents.
Impact on Transit Safety
The charges have reignited concerns about safety on the TTC. In 2025, the TTC reported a 15% increase in reported sexual assaults compared to the previous year. Transit agency officials have announced increased patrols and improved lighting at stations.
Mayor Olivia Chow commented, “We will not tolerate violence against women. The TTC must be a safe space for everyone. We are working with police to enhance security measures.”
Advocacy groups have called for more action, including better training for staff and public awareness campaigns. The TTC has implemented a campaign to encourage bystander intervention and reporting of incidents.
