Canadian Blood Services Urges Canada Day Donations Amid Summer Cancellations

Urgent Call for Donors

Canadian Blood Services is appealing to Canadians to book blood donation appointments ahead of Canada Day, as the organization faces a surge in summer cancellations. According to a news release, the agency needs thousands of additional donors to maintain adequate blood product supplies for hospitals across the country.

Summer Cancellations Impact Supply

Every summer, cancellations increase as donors go on vacation or become busy with seasonal activities. This year, Canadian Blood Services reports that cancellations have already risen by 20% compared to last month. The organization is particularly concerned about the long weekend, when many regular donors are unavailable.

“We need donors to step up now before the long weekend,” said a spokesperson for Canadian Blood Services. “Blood products have a short shelf life, so we rely on a steady stream of donations to meet patient needs.”

How to Help

Donors can book appointments online or through the GiveBlood app. Walk-ins are also welcome at donor centres across the country. Canadian Blood Services emphasizes that one donation can save up to three lives.

The agency is also reminding donors that all blood types are needed, but there is a particular demand for O-negative and O-positive blood, which are often used in emergencies.

Canada Day Operations

Many donor centres will remain open on Canada Day to accommodate donors. Canadian Blood Services encourages people to make donation part of their holiday celebrations. “Giving blood is a meaningful way to celebrate Canada’s birthday and help your community,” the spokesperson added.
