The Government of Alberta has announced a $2 million investment to support planning for a major expansion of the Strathcona County Hospital. The project aims to significantly enhance healthcare services for the region's growing population.
Expansion Details
Minister of Hospitals and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones revealed that the expansion will add up to 120 inpatient beds, with space reserved for an additional 32 beds to accommodate future growth. Currently, more than 100,000 residents must travel from the Sherwood Park area into Edmonton to access inpatient services. The expansion will also include new surgical suites capable of supporting up to 4,100 surgeries annually, specialized ambulatory clinics, two endoscopy procedure rooms, expanded diagnostic imaging, pharmacy and laboratory services, and mental health support.
Planning and Timeline
Jones emphasized the complexity and cost of health infrastructure, stating, "We want to build it right so it stands the test of time, but rest assured that we will do everything we can to expedite construction." The province will develop a business case next year to clarify the scope and cost of the facility, which will be submitted to the Treasury Board as part of Budget 2027.
The hospital, located 20 kilometers east of Edmonton, currently provides emergency care, diagnostic imaging, and outpatient consulting services but lacks inpatient services. The expansion is designed to address this gap and reduce the need for residents to travel to Edmonton for care.
Political Context
Opposition MLA Lizette Tejada has introduced a motion highlighting that hospitals across the province are underfunded and over-capacity, leading to delays in urgent care and, in some cases, deaths. The motion calls for regular reporting of hospital deaths in emergency departments, additional funding for capacity expansion, and increased support for public healthcare workers.
Minister Jones acknowledged the pressures on the hospital system, noting that the government is reviewing the motion and agrees that hospitals are under pressure. He pointed to plans to build capacity in high-pressure areas, including the planning and land acquisition for eight urgent care centers across the province, two of which will be in the Edmonton area. "We are also moving forward with the planning and land acquisition for eight urgent care centres across the province to increase access, two of those will be in the Edmonton area, and to relieve pressures on our ED," Jones said.
Conclusion
The $2 million planning investment marks a critical first step toward expanding the Strathcona County Hospital, which will bring essential inpatient services closer to home for thousands of Albertans. The project underscores the province's commitment to addressing healthcare infrastructure needs and improving patient access across the region.
