Nova Scotia Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Nicole Boutilier as its new CEO and president, effective immediately. The decision was confirmed by the health authority's board of directors on June 30, 2026.
Background and Experience
Dr. Boutilier brings extensive experience in healthcare leadership, having previously served as the vice president of medicine and chief medical officer for Nova Scotia Health. She has also held senior roles at the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine.
According to the health authority, Boutilier's appointment comes after a comprehensive national search. She succeeds Dr. Brendan Carr, who held the position for six years.
Immediate Priorities
In her new role, Boutilier will oversee the province's largest employer, with more than 23,000 staff and a budget exceeding $4 billion. Her immediate priorities include addressing surgical backlogs, improving emergency department wait times, and advancing the province's healthcare transformation plan.
“I am honoured to take on this role and committed to working with our team to deliver high-quality care for all Nova Scotians,” Boutilier said in a statement. “We have a strong foundation to build upon, and I look forward to continuing our progress.”
Reactions and Support
Health Minister Michelle Thompson welcomed the appointment, stating that Boutilier's clinical background and administrative experience make her well-suited to lead the health authority. “Dr. Boutilier understands the challenges facing our healthcare system and has the vision to drive meaningful change,” Thompson said.
The Nova Scotia Health Board of Directors also expressed confidence in the new CEO. Board Chair John C. MacIntyre noted that Boutilier's collaborative leadership style and deep understanding of the system will be assets.
