The Gateway Centre for Excellence in Rural Health has secured a $100,000 grant to fund an innovative, informal cancer screening initiative aimed at reaching underserved populations.
Gwen Devereaux, a representative from the Gateway Centre, emphasized the importance of meeting community members where they are. The program is designed to remove traditional barriers to healthcare access, such as transportation and scheduling conflicts, by offering screenings in familiar, non-clinical settings.

The grant will enable the organization to expand its outreach efforts across Huron County and surrounding areas. The informal screening model has already shown promise during a pilot program in October 2025, where health vitals were taken from local firefighters in Wingham, Ontario.
By bringing services directly to community hubs, the initiative aims to detect cancer earlier in populations that might otherwise avoid regular checkups. This approach is particularly crucial for rural areas where healthcare facilities are often sparse.
