A 30-year-old hospital worker in Budapest, Hungary, has been arrested on suspicion of stealing human remains from his workplace and abandoned cemeteries, then cooking and eating them, according to Hungarian police.
Arrest and Discovery
Hungary's National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI) announced the arrest in a Facebook post. During a search of the suspect's home, investigators found a "prepared human face, facial skin, bones stored in a suitcase, a complete lower leg, brain, hand, head, skulls and a heart" in a jar. One additional body part is being analyzed to determine if it is human or animal.
Suspect's Motivation
According to authorities, the man told police he was "particularly attracted to human body parts, from which he had prepared food for himself and consumed them in various ways." Police added that he is "passionate about anatomy and pathology, and likes to dissect animals." The suspect is believed to have obtained the remains through his hospital job and by exhuming bodies from abandoned cemeteries in Slovakia and Hungary.
Investigation and Charges
Police seized the man's computer, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and SIM and data cards. He is currently held on suspicion of illegally using human remains, but additional charges may follow once forensic experts determine the origin of all body parts. The suspect's name has not been released.
