Maya Gebala's family has not relocated to the United States, according to her mother, Cia Edmonds. In a recent Facebook update, Edmonds clarified that the process of transferring Maya to a U.S. medical facility has been challenging.
Family Denies Relocation Rumors
“We haven’t left Canada. The process to transfer hasn’t been easy to say the least. However, you will hear it from us first thing if or when we do,” Edmonds wrote on her Facebook page. She urged followers to disregard false information from other sources, noting that impostor accounts are spreading misinformation.
Recovery Progress
Edmonds shared encouraging news about Maya's recovery. The 12-year-old's feeding tube has been removed and replaced with a G-tube for direct nutrition. “I KNOW she is grateful, as she’s removed it 3 times now on her own,” Edmonds wrote, adding that Maya is showing strong signs of learning to swallow again.
Maya is scheduled for surgery on May 5 to receive a prosthetic skull cap. The family hopes this will help regulate cerebral fluid accumulation and relieve pressure on her left eye, potentially restoring vision in both eyes.
Motor Skills and Responsiveness
Edmonds noted that Maya's motor skills are developing. She watches her fingers move and tries to direct them. Although her right arm and leg are unresponsive due to a stroke, she can squeeze a hand when trying hard. “If you tickle her foot, her toes wiggle,” Edmonds added.
Doctors had warned that Maya might never speak again, but Edmonds said, “She has continued to prove them wrong.”
Dana White's Offer
Earlier this month, Edmonds announced that UFC president Dana White had offered to cover Maya's treatment and family accommodation in Los Angeles. White confirmed the offer, stating that the family wanted to give Maya the best chance possible, with options in L.A., Houston, and Seattle.
For now, Maya remains at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Her father, David Gebala, also posted that his social media accounts had been hacked, urging followers to rely only on official updates.
