Uber's Hidden Currency Fees: How Travelers Can Save Money Abroad

Many American travelers who rely on ride-sharing apps like Uber domestically also find them convenient when exploring foreign destinations. From Europe and South America to Africa and Asia, Uber has become a global transportation staple. However, in 2025, the company quietly implemented a significant change to its international billing practices, catching some frequent flyers off guard.

The Shift to Preferred Currency Pricing

Historically, Uber automatically charged passengers in the local currency of their location. A ride in New York would appear in U.S. dollars, while a trip in Cairo would be billed in Egyptian pounds. This system required users to mentally convert prices but avoided additional fees. Without explicit notification to all users, Uber began defaulting to charging travelers in their home currency worldwide, regardless of destination.

This new feature, called Preferred Currency Pricing, is marketed as a convenience. According to Uber's official documentation, it "allows riders to see pricing in their familiar home currency — avoiding the hassle of doing currency conversion math in their head when requesting a ride." However, this convenience comes at a cost: a 1.5% conversion fee added to each transaction.

Why Paying in Local Currency Is Financially Smarter

Eric Croak, a certified financial planner and accredited wealth management adviser, warns that the true expense often exceeds Uber's stated fee. "People don't realize how much they lose to conversion until after it's too late," he explains. The 1.5% charge is just the beginning; the real financial damage occurs through unfavorable exchange rates applied by Uber.

When you pay in your home currency through Uber, the company uses a proprietary "benchmark" rate for conversions, which is not publicly disclosed and typically less favorable than market rates. Croak notes that "Uber does not use bank rates" for these calculations. In contrast, paying in local currency allows your credit card issuer to handle the conversion, usually at rates closely aligned with the market.

For example, on a $100 ride overseas, the combination of Uber's inflated exchange rate and the 1.5% fee could silently add $7 to $8.50 to your total. Over a week or two of travel, these extra costs can accumulate significantly. "You're giving the equivalent of a fancy meal to an app for no reason," Croak remarks.

How to Opt Out of Preferred Currency Pricing

Fortunately, Uber provides an option for most users to disable this feature and pay in local currency. The process is straightforward and can be completed in minutes:

  1. Open the Uber app and log into your account by tapping the person icon in the lower right corner.
  2. Access your Uber wallet in the upper right corner.
  3. Scroll to "preferred currency" next to the globe icon.
  4. Select "Always pay in local currency" and confirm.

Once configured, your settings will show "No preferred currency," and you'll be billed in the local currency when traveling. The app automatically reverts to your home currency upon returning. However, note that business profiles, Uber Cash, Uber One credits, vouchers, rentals, scheduled rides, and orders through third-party partners are ineligible for this opt-out.

Additional Strategies for Cost-Effective Travel

Using a travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees can further optimize savings. Ori Brian, a travel adviser and founder of Archive Travel, recommends cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, which offer favorable exchange rates and often include travel insurance benefits.

By combining local currency payments with a fee-free credit card, travelers can avoid double charges—both from Uber and their card issuer. This approach not only saves money on rides but also on other international purchases.

In an era where travel expenses are scrutinized more than ever, taking a few moments to adjust your Uber settings and choose the right payment method can stretch your budget and enhance your overall experience abroad.
