Downtown Mission Shatters Fundraising Record in Annual Coldest Night Event
Windsor's Downtown Mission has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing its fundraising target during the recent Coldest Night of the Year event. The homeless shelter raised more than $131,000 over the weekend, exceeding its objective of $125,000 for this year's fundraiser.
Record-Breaking Success for Windsor's Largest Homeless Shelter
The total represents a new record for Windsor's largest homeless shelter, according to Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin, executive director of The Downtown Mission. This achievement highlights the community's strong support for the organization's vital work.
"But we don't want people to stop giving," Ponniah-Goulin emphasized on Saturday. Donations will continue to be accepted until March 31, providing additional opportunities for community members to contribute to this important cause.
Community Participation and Post-Walk Celebration
Approximately 250 participants braved the elements to take part in the walking tour through downtown Windsor on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The event marked the 14th annual Coldest Night of the Year in Windsor, drawing supporters from across the community.
After completing either the two-kilometre or five-kilometre walking routes, participants were treated to hot bowls of comforting chili at the Downtown Mission on Ouellette Avenue. This post-walk gathering provided a warm conclusion to the outdoor event and fostered community connections.
Growing Demand for Shelter Services
The charity, which operates entirely on community donations, points to a still-growing demand for its services and supports. This year's fundraising success comes after the shelter raised $123,000 during last year's Coldest Night of the Year event, demonstrating increased community engagement.
The Downtown Mission serves Windsor's homeless and vulnerable populations, providing essential resources and support throughout the year. The organization's work has become increasingly crucial as needs continue to expand within the community.
How to Support the Downtown Mission
Community members interested in supporting the Downtown Mission can still contribute to this year's fundraising efforts. Donations are being accepted through the end of March, with information available online for those wishing to make contributions.
The success of this year's Coldest Night of the Year event demonstrates the power of community support in addressing homelessness and supporting vulnerable populations in Windsor.
