Pollster Warns GOP: Texas Senate Seat at Risk from Democratic Surge
Pollster: Texas Senate Seat Vulnerable to Democratic Upset

Pollster Frank Luntz Issues Stark Warning to GOP Over Texas Senate Race

Longtime Republican pollster Frank Luntz is sounding the alarm for his party, cautioning that Texas possesses the "exact ingredient" for a potential Democratic upset in November's crucial U.S. Senate election. In an interview with NewsNation's Leland Vittert, Luntz challenged the long-held assumption that Texas remains solidly Republican territory.

Demographic Shifts and Democratic Momentum

"The assumption has been for the last 20, 25 years, that Texas is solidly Republican," Luntz stated. "But the demographics are changing." He emphasized that the state is becoming less white while Democrats are improving their organizational efforts nationwide. This year, Democrats have witnessed "incredibly high" turnout in special elections and primaries across the country.

In Texas specifically, more than 2.2 million people voted in this week's Democratic primary, setting a midterm record for the state. This surge propelled state Representative James Talarico to victory over Representative Jasmine Crockett for the Democratic nomination.

"If you're a Democrat, you can't wait to vote," Luntz observed. "Every Democrat is looking to participate." Meanwhile, he noted that some Republican voters are staying home, compounding the party's challenges.

Republican Infighting and Primary Turmoil

Texas Republicans face additional complications from a vicious primary battle between state Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Senator John Cornyn, which is heading to a runoff. President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to endorse Cornyn, with expectations that Paxton would subsequently withdraw. However, Paxton has indicated he will not drop out of the race.

"The Republicans still have a clear advantage," Luntz acknowledged. "But that advantage has been shrinking and shrinking. And when you have two candidates destroying each other, like these two are, this is the exact ingredient that you could have low Republican turnout in November, a split party, you could conceivably see a Democrat surprising people."

Affordability: The Key Deciding Factor

Luntz further warned Republicans that control over the Senate could hinge on a single issue currently not favoring the GOP: affordability. "That's it," he declared. "That's the key decider." He drew parallels to Georgia's Senate seats during the 2020 election, suggesting that continued Republican infighting in Texas could leave their seat vulnerable this November.

The pollster's analysis highlights how demographic evolution, Democratic enthusiasm, and internal Republican conflicts are converging to create a potentially volatile political landscape in Texas, with significant implications for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
