Calgary Man Charged in Two Sexual Assault Cases After DNA Match
Calgary Man Charged After DNA Links Him to Two Sexual Assaults

A Calgary man is facing sexual assault charges after a nearly three-year investigation that culminated in a DNA match linking him to two separate incidents.

Arrest and Charges

Gramey Weldeselsa, 37, was arrested on April 15 after a DNA sample was matched to biological evidence collected from two sexual assault cases. He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. There is no court record of any prior offences.

Details of the Assaults

The first assault occurred on July 23, 2023, when a woman was sexually assaulted after declining a man's offer of money in exchange for sex. The incident took place near Central Memorial Park between 1 and 2 a.m. The victim sought medical treatment at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre, where biological evidence was collected. A DNA profile was created but did not match any existing profiles at the time. CCTV footage from the area was reviewed, but no suspect was identified.

The second assault happened on December 9, 2024, near 17 Avenue and 12 Street S.W. A woman who was sleeping outside was sexually assaulted shortly before 3 a.m. after refusing a similar offer. She called 911 and was taken to the hospital, where biological evidence was collected. After reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence, police identified a suspect and obtained a warrant to secure a DNA sample.

Investigation and DNA Link

The DNA sample was sent for analysis, and after what police described as a methodical and lengthy process, results received on April 14 linked the sample to both sexual assaults. Police believe there may be other victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement, the Calgary Police Service emphasized that there is no time limit on reporting sexual assault in Canada. Anyone who believes they are a victim is encouraged to report it, even if many years have passed since the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477, or online through the Crime Stoppers website or P3 Tips app.
