The City of Ottawa has released its annual list of what's open and closed on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Residents and visitors should plan accordingly as many services will be unavailable or operating on reduced hours.
City Services and Facilities
All Ottawa Public Library branches will be closed on Canada Day. The Ottawa City Hall and all client service centres will also be shut. Emergency services will remain operational, including police, fire, and paramedics.
Recreation and cultural facilities, including swimming pools, fitness centres, and arenas, will be closed. The Ottawa City Hall's Canada Day celebrations will proceed as planned, with events from morning until late evening.
Transit and Parking
OC Transpo will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule. Buses and O-Train Line 1 will run with reduced frequency. Para Transpo will also follow a holiday schedule. Free parking will be available at OC Transpo park-and-ride lots, but street parking regulations remain in effect.
Garbage and Recycling
There will be no curbside garbage, recycling, or green bin collection on Canada Day. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. The city's household hazardous waste depot will be closed.
Attractions and Museums
Major museums and attractions will be open, including the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. Many will offer free admission or special Canada Day programming. The Rideau Canal will be open for boating and paddle sports.
Retail and Grocery
Most grocery stores and major retail chains will be closed on Canada Day. Some convenience stores and drugstores may remain open. The ByWard Market will be open, with vendors operating on holiday hours.
